Dollar Rallies to Six-Month High on Signs of U.S. Recovery Share Business

ExchangeTwitterFacebook| Email | Print | A A A
By Ben Levisohn and Inyoung Hwang

Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- The dollar rose to a six-month high against the euro as reports showed the U.S. economy beat estimates by growing in the fourth quarter at the fastest pace since 2003 and consumer confidence improved in January.

The euro posted its biggest monthly drop against the yen in a year on concern Greece’s budget problems will spread. The franc fell from a 10-month high against the euro on speculation Switzerland’s central bank intervened in currency markets to curb its strength and support the nation’s economy.

“The dollar was strong already, and it’s continued the trend,” said John Norris, senior market strategist at Brewer Investment Group in Chicago. “Any time the numbers beat expectations that significantly, it’s good news.”

The U.S. currency advanced 0.8 percent to $1.3863 per euro at 5:01 p.m. in New York, from $1.3971 yesterday. It reached $1.3863, the strongest level since July 9. The dollar increased 0.4 percent to 90.27 yen, from 89.92. It earlier advanced 1.1 percent, the biggest intraday gain since Jan. 7. The yen climbed 0.4 percent to 125.13 per euro, from 125.63, after earlier touching 124.82, the strongest level since April 28.

The euro may fall below $1.35 if it sustains a drop past $1.38, the 50 percent Fibonacci retracement of the rally from its March 4 low of $1.2457, said Richard Ross, a global technical strategist at Auerbach Grayson Co. in New York. The 16-nation currency may reach $1.3483, the next Fibonacci level, according to Ross.

“The euro is on a pretty precipitous slope,” Ross said. “This isn’t a correction anymore. It’s looking more like a cyclical bear market.”

Fibonacci Analysis

Fibonacci analysis is based on the theory that securities tend to rise or fall by specific percentages after reaching a new high or low. A break through one level indicates a currency may move to the next line. A failure to break through indicates a trend may be ending.

The franc weakened as much as 0.4 percent to 1.4765 after appreciating to 1.4636, the strongest level since March 10, two days before the central bank intervened last year.

“We could associate this possibly with action from the Swiss National Bank,” said Russ Oxley, head of rates in Glasgow at Ignis Asset Management, which has 71 billion pounds ($114 billion) of assets. “People thought they were much more comfortable with the strength of the euro, but that obviously seems to have been a false impression.”

Swiss National Bank President Philipp Hildebrand, in Davos, Switzerland, for the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, declined to comment. Central banks intervene by buying or selling currencies to influence exchange rates.

Gain in GDP

The dollar strengthened as the Commerce Department reported that gross domestic product increased at a 5.7 percent annual pace from October through December, the fastest in six years. The median forecast of 84 economists in a Bloomberg News survey was for a 4.7 percent advance.

“With good news, the market reacted in favor of the currency,” said Ronald Leven, currency strategist at Morgan Stanley in New York. “The dollar will hold up pretty well.”

The dollar extended its gain versus the euro after the Reuters/University of Michigan final index of U.S. consumer sentiment increased to 74.4 in January, from 72.5 a month earlier. The median estimate of 58 economists in a Bloomberg News survey was for an increase to 73.

The euro fell 6.1 percent versus the yen in January in its biggest monthly drop since depreciating 9.1 percent in January 2009. Greece’s bonds tumbled on concern the nation can’t reduce its budget deficit without outside help. The bonds were the world’s worst performers in January, losing 6 percent, Bloomberg/EFFAS indexes show.

‘Financial Support’

“The EU and the International Monetary Fund will ultimately be willing to provide some type of financial support for Greece,” buoying the euro in months to come, Jens Nordvig, a managing director for currency research at Nomura International Plc in New York, wrote in a report yesterday.

The European Commission expects to give an assessment of Greece’s budget plan on Feb. 3, the commission said in a statement on its Web site today.

The yen fell earlier from a nine-month high versus the euro as Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki Shirakawa said at a business conference in Tokyo today that Japan’s policy makers are “prepared to act swiftly and decisively should concerns that financial market stability might be hampered re-emerge.” The central bank’s monthly 1.8 trillion yen ($20 billion) of bond purchases are appropriate, he said.

“Deflation continues to stalk Japan and a strong yen is going to make it worse, so the risk of them taking action is not something that can be ignored,” said Jeremy Stretch, a currency strategist in London at Rabobank International.

Finance Minister Naoto Kan reiterated his call for the central bank to support an economy under threat from falling prices and a rising currency.

The yen gained this month against all of its 16 most-traded counterparts tracked by Bloomberg, fanning concern its strength will dent exports for companies such as Toyota Motor Corp.

Words of Life or Death

Melanie Chitwood

"The tongue can bring death or life; those who love to talk will reap the consequences." Proverbs 18:21 (NLT)

Devotion:

I often hear my husband Scott say something to my sons that brings a smile to my face. "Have you told your mom you love her today? Don't ever forget you have the best mom in the world." When I hear him praise me to our sons, I feel encouraged and appreciated. From my husband's example, I've learned to be careful about the words I say not only to my husband but also about my husband.

Today's verse tells us our words can bring "death or life." In our marriages, this means our words can either tear down our spouses or build them up. I've been noticing lately if I'm more likely to say words such as, "I'm married to the greatest man." Or do my words tend to be critical, such as, "I told you so," or "You don't even try to understand me"? What about you and your words to your husband? When you speak to your husband, do you fill him up with praise or make him feel like he's not measuring up?

Now let's consider the words we say about our husbands to others. What kind of things do you say about your husband to your children, best friend, sister, or mother? I tend to be a venter when I am angry or frustrated with my husband. Sometimes I turn to others because I'm seeking validation for my angry feelings. Often I vent when I haven't taken the time first to deal with the situation with God. I'm learning that if I go to the Lord first in prayer, pouring out my heart to Him, He changes my heart and brings me to a place of repentance and calmness. Then I'm able to let go of my anger and move on or talk to my husband in a loving manner.

Scripture gives plenty of evidence that God's words have the power of life. In Genesis we're told God created every inch of the world with His spoken words. John 1:1 tells us that Jesus is the Word. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus heals countless people with the power of His words. In a similar manner, God wants our words to bring life to our marriages. We can choose what we will sow—words of life or words of death—and we will reap the consequences many times over.

So will you take some time today to consider the words you use to and about your spouse? Use today's application steps to fill up your husband with words of life.

Dear Lord, let my words to my spouse and about my spouse draw us closer to one another. Teach me to communicate in ways that build my husband up. Help me hold my tongue when I'm about to say something that will tear him down. If pride, stubbornness, selfishness, or any other sin is preventing me from speaking words of life in our marriage, Lord, I confess that right now. Make me aware of any words of death I've spoken in our marriage, and as the Holy Spirit brings those to my mind, help me confess and turn from them, especially any words of divorce. Break any curse on our marriage from hurtful, angry, or destructive words. Guided by Your wisdom and love, may our words to and about one another build a protective wall around our marriage. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

30 Days to Taming Your Tongue and accompanying Workbook by Deborah Smith Pegues

Application Steps:

Considering the list below, which words do you speak most frequently to your husband, "words of life" or "words of death"? Plan on blessing your husband with at least one phrase from the "words of life" suggestions.

Words of Life

I appreciate how hard you work.

You are an incredible husband.

You have great insight.

I'm really looking forward to going out with you.

I'm sorry.

I was wrong.

Will you forgive me?

Thank you.

I understand.

Words of Death

You never listen to me.

You just don't get it.

I told you so.

You should have...

I wish you could just try to understand me for once.

How could you think that?

Why did I ever marry you?

We'd be better off divorced.

Reflections:

What situations tend to cause you to speak "words of death" to your husband? What's a different way to handle these situations?

Are there certain words you need to make off-limits in your marriage?

In what other relationships do you need to practice speaking "words of life"?

Power Verses:

Ephesians 4:29, "Watch the way you talk. Let nothing foul or dirty come out of your mouth. Say only what helps, each word a gift." (MSG)

Psalm 19:14, "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer." (NLT)

Biblical Fasting

Matthew 6:4-18

God's Word contains commands about many things, from frequency of prayer and expressions of worship to relationships with other people (1 Thess. 5:17; Deut. 6:5; John 13:34). Surprisingly, though, there is no place in the Scriptures where the believer is specifically instructed to fast.

Yet the words "when you fast" (Matt. 6:16, emphasis added) show Jesus' expectation that His followers would practice this discipline. And there are many biblical examples of godly people who abstained from certain activities in order to draw close to God.

Before we go further, it is important to dispel a popular misunderstanding. Fasting doesn't serve to change God's mind, speed up His answer, or manipulate His will. Instead, it prepares us to hear from Him by temporarily laying aside something that vies for our attention or devotion—such as food, sleep, or a time of intimacy with a spouse.

Denying ourselves in this way makes us better able to focus on Christ and hear Him clearly. His Spirit often starts by bringing to mind sin that needs to be confessed. In so doing, He sanctifies our thoughts—then He can use this precious time to intensify our desire for Him, reveal His Will, and grant understanding and peace. In essence, fasting binds us to Him in such oneness that we won't ever be the same again.

Do you want to see God move in awesome ways? By removing anything that hinders your focus, you can fix attention solely on the Creator and cry out to Him regarding your needs. As you gain understanding about your Father and yourself, you will grow closer to Him.

Lord, this is a Mess

Lysa TerKeurst

"In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness..."

Romans 8:26 (NIV)

Devotion:

Have you ever been in a situation that seemed like such a mess you simply couldn't make sense of it? Like trying to straighten out a tangled necklace, you wonder how in heavens' name did all these knots get kinked and twisted and pulled so tight. And in the midst of trying to untangle a knot on one side you inadvertently form another on the other end.

It's frustrating when this happens with a piece of jewelry. And it's even more frustrating when it happens in relationships.

The other day I sat down to pray about a messy relationship and the knots were so consuming I couldn't even begin to make sense of it all. I didn't even know what to pray. I kept trying to think of wise words to offer up to the Lord that would surely unlock pieces and parts of this mess. But I was completely without a drop of insight. All I could see was a mess.

So, that's all I prayed, "Lord, this is a mess."

And then I just sat quietly and waited.

And waited.

And waited.

All that waiting time makes a doing girl like me feel like my nerves are going to bust out of my skin and start yanking my limbs into action. So, with all my might, I made myself sit and say nothing at all except, "Lord, this is a mess." And you know what? It was really hard to sit there with no answers. No wise words to pray. My usually very verbal self couldn't express anything but, "Lord, this is a mess."

I believe it's situations like this for which Romans 8:26-28 was written:

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose (NIV).

In our weakness we can't objectively search our mind and spirit. And often in our weakness we can't untangle our knots according to God's will. We are too intertwined in emotion and assumption. That's why sometimes it's best if we just simply sit quietly and let the Spirit do some groaning, untangling and working on our behalf.

Like verse 28 says, there is good to come out of this. God is working and will work good out of this mess. Sometimes I think the only thing standing between our mess and His good work from it is our need to sit quietly. In the quiet beautiful things happen:

We calm down.
We create some white space between our harsh reaction and the way we'd want to react if we really thought things through first.
We can ask God to intervene with real wisdom instead of our assumptions.
God can show us where we need to change. We can't control the other person and parking our efforts toward trying will exhaust us. But we can let God help us change, which will create positive progress. (For more great things that can happen in the quiet, visit Lysa's blog linked below.)
I can't help but notice that the first four letters of Messiah spell mess. We need Him. Only the Messiah can take our mess and turn it into a untangled message of hope, forgiveness, and ultimately love.

Dear Lord, this is a mess. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Application Steps:

The next time I'm in the midst of a mess, where is a quiet place I can sit with the Lord? How can I plan now to not react in the moment?

What are some personal benefits that would happen if I heeded this advice and stopped rushing in to fix things, but rather gave God time to speak to my heart?

No one gets into heaven on the strength of good works and kind behavior. When we stand before God, only our condition will matter. In place of our old, dead "flesh" nature, we want to show Him the living spirit we received when Jesus Christ came into our life.

Religious but Lost

John 3:1-6

Nicodemus would probably be welcome at any church today. He seems an ideal member—principled, knowledgeable, morally upstanding, courteous, and humble. However, Nicodemus had two big problems despite all of that outward religious appeal. He was blind to the truth and spiritually dead.

The man was lost. That is, he did not have a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. As a Pharisee, Nicodemus adhered to strict Jewish codes and laws, so he was certainly religious. But the problem of the lost person is not attitudes, conduct, or even character. We can change and control those through sheer determination, and many folks do. What people really need is a change of condition. We come into this world with a sinful nature that is bent away from God.

Jesus explained to the observant rabbi that all his outward goodness couldn't erase, replace, or change his nature. Instead, every person who desires to serve God must be born again. The Lord promised that if Nicodemus received Him as Savior, then he would enter into a brand-new life. His old sinful nature would be transformed so that he could have a real relationship with God. Instead of appearing to be a religious man, Nicodemus would be a true believer.

No one gets into heaven on the strength of good works and kind behavior. When we stand before God, only our condition will matter. In place of our old, dead "flesh" nature, we want to show Him the living spirit we received when Jesus Christ came into our life.

The Treasure that Turns Other Treasures to Garbage

John Piper

But whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith.
Paul has a way of playing your game, winning, and then saying the game is bunk. He does it, for example, in 2 Corinthians 11:21-12:11 where he lists his "superior" achievements and then says, "I have been a fool! You forced me to it" (2 Corinthians 12:11). In other words, I can play your game of measuring myself by your standards, win, and then call it all worthless. It is fool's play.

He does it again here in Philippians 3. He warns the church to watch out for the evildoing dogs who mutilate the flesh (people who insist on circumcision as a way of getting right with God). The problem with these people is that they "put confidence in the flesh"-that is, they bank on their works for justification (vv. 2-3, cf. v. 9).

So Paul says, OK let's play that game for a moment. And then he lists his works of the flesh and knocks his opponents out of the ring with legal achievements. "If anyone else thinks he has reason for confidence in the flesh, I have more." Indeed he does.

Then come three of the best verses in all the Bible. In essence: the victory I just won in the contest of the flesh is a pile of garbage (the Greek is sku, bala, v. 8). And the reason he uses such a strong word (refuse!) is that the alternative is Christ. Compared to Christ being the greatest Pharisee of his time was foul garbage.

But that is too vague. He is not vague. He does not say simply that compared to Christ legal achievements are garbage; he is more specific. He says that what is superior to moral and religious achievements is 1) knowing Christ, 2) gaining Christ, and 3) being found in Christ.

1. Knowing Christ. "Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (v. 8). "Knowing" here is not just knowing the fact that Jesus is Lord. It is the kind of knowing that prompts the phrase, "my Lord"! He knows the supreme Lord of the universe (see 2:9-11) as his Lord. So there are two aspects to Paul's passion for Christ here. One is the rational and relational knowledge of the greatest person in the universe. Paul's mind and heart are full of Christ. The other is that he belongs to Christ as subject to the all-ruling, all-protecting Lord. This is better than being at the top of any human heap.

2. Gaining Christ. "For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ" (v. 8). "Gain" means get all that Christ is for us in heaven, not just on earth. Paul has already said, "To live is Christ and to die is gain" (v. 21), because "to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better" (1:23). And he is about to say, "I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own" (3:12). So it is clear that part of what makes human achievement a pile of garbage compared to Christ is that soon (and very soon!) he is going to meet the king-in a way far more full and intimate and stunning and satisfying than anything he has known here. And he has known so much of Christ here that the garbage verdict has been rendered on that alone.

3. Being found in Christ. ". . . and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith" (v. 9). Paul was overwhelmed by the fact that "in Christ"-that is, united to Christ by faith alone-he possessed a righteousness that was infinitely better than all his legal achievements could ever be. Paul knew he needed a righteous life in order to be accepted by God and in order to enjoy all the glories of Christ forever. He did not have such a righteousness in himself. He needed the free gift of righteousness from God himself. God gave it to him in Christ.

Therefore Jesus Christ was both the treasure he cherished and the one who provided the right to have the treasure. In Christ alone Paul had a right to know and gain Christ. And that is all he wanted. That is the gospel. This is what we mean by treasuring Christ together. Christ alone is the ground of our acceptance with God and the goal of our heart's desire. He is our righteousness and our reward. Compared to him (knowing him, gaining him, being found in him) all else is garbage.

Treasuring Christ together with you,
Pastor John

What is love?..........

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous;

love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly;

it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered,

does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;

bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

Love never fails...But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.

1 Corinthians 13:4-7,13

Love is patient,
True love is unconditional, that is, it does not depend on the attributes or lack thereof of the person loved, therefore, it is willing to give as much time necessary, and as much space as necessary for that person to grow.

love is kind and is not jealous;
Love seeks to give others something of benefit for their welfare, and consequently, rejoices when they do benefit.

love does not brag and is not arrogant,
To lift one's self up in reference to others leaves no room for unconditional, graceful love.

does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own,
To act inappropriately, shamefully (morally, especially in the area of sexual purity) is not in accordance with true love. Love never seeks it's own gratificaiton but rather the interests of others.

is not provoked,
Selfishness seeks to manipulate others by stimulating certain selfish emotions. Love will not do this to others, nor will it let it happen to itself.

does not take into account a wrong suffered,
Forgivenss. Let it go. Bitterness is the acid. You are the container. Get rid of it or it will kill you.

does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;
Love does not somehow gloss over things that are going to be hurtful. True love originates from the truth.

bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.
If love really is unconditional, it will hold any weight, face any doubt, persist through hopelessness, and last any trial

Love never fails...
If it did, would it be love?

But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.
Someday, faith will not be needed, for we will see God. Hope will not be needed, for when everything is fulfilled, there is no need for hope. But love, yes, to it there will be no end. If it did, it wouldn't be love.

The good side of bro sam spamming........

I feel very joyful whenever I see bro sam start using the word God, Jesus, Lord and Amen. These 4 very powerful words have kept mankind in equilibrium till today ever since Adam and Eve were expel form the Garden of Eden.......These 4 words are greatly feared by the enemy.....The enemy will tremble and flee when we uttered any of these 4 holy words...

The harsh real world......or is it?

This blogswar between me and bro sam has been going on for more than a week. So who do you think is the winner. Well bro sam and me are both winners and losers.

I am a loser because I did not expect bro sam to be so vicious and opportunistic. It all started when I just put an innocent comment in his blog asking him not to call anyone a loser.....Hell broke loose. He got angry? He went into a rage? or He saw an opportunity for some free publicity stunt...I could do censorship and remove the chat box. But I did not as God has not prompt me to do so. From the way he spams my chat box and his repetitive comments you can infer that bro sam is in a frenzy to swarm my blog with his blogsite address. Maybe I should rename my blog as DAY SPAMMING MIKE'S BLOG......lol
I am flattered that my blog inadvertently promoted his private blog as he claimed.

bro sam is also a loser. He worship money....every USD 38 he secured made him so esctatic...he has to let the whole world knows...to make people jealous as he put it....He is a "winner" as far as he is concern. Why? His clickbank continue to increase according to his claims....

If I get enraged by bro sam action, then I am a loser again. But if I treat it as an opportunity to lead bro sam to Christ then I am the winner especially in God's loving eyes..........
in Jesus most loving name.....Amen

The Colors of Emotion

Susanne Scheppmann

"This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything." 1 John 3:19-20 (NIV)

Devotion:

My feelings scoot across the emotion spectrum. Some days are happy days. Other mornings I don't want to crawl out of bed—I just want to wallow in misery and depression. I sigh and say to my husband, "I have the blues today."

I guess you could say I am a "colorful" person. Maybe you are too. Have you ever found yourself saying something like ...

· I am feeling blue today.

· I am so angry; I'm seeing red.

· I am green with envy.

· I am in black despair.

Often our emotions are not based on reality, but on a temporary perception of reality. The prophet Jeremiah wrote, "The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (Jeremiah 17:9, NIV). I don't always understand why I feel the way I do. My moods could result from weariness, hormones, or an unexpected surprise.

Fortunately, although our hearts are deceitful and trick us into colorful emotions, God is bigger and stronger than our weak hearts. Our key verse states, "This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything (1 John 3:19-20, NIV; emphasis added). This makes me shout aloud, "Hallelujah!"

We still hold some responsibility, however, for our thoughts and emotions. Proverbs 4:23 instructs, "Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life" (NIV)." How do we do this? We should take care about the books, movies and television that we allow to influence our thoughts. Listening to gossip, rumors and discontent from friends can certainly stir up negative feelings as well.

Instead of infusing ourselves with emotional junk food, we need to nourish our minds with godly influences. For example, read the Bible, chat with godly friends, or listen to praise music. The more joyful and contentment-filled influences we filter our thoughts through each day, the more we'll experience a positive emotional state—in fact, we'll be tickled pink!

Dear Lord, grant me the ability to recognize my emotions are not always truth. I thank You that You are bigger and stronger than my deceitful heart. Teach me how to be most effective in guarding my heart from fickle emotions. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Accepted by the Lord

Romans 8:14-16

Our heavenly Father knows how we yearn to be accepted and to feel that we belong. He provides for both of these needs when we receive His Son Jesus as our Savior.

Because of Adam's sin, our spiritual connection with the Lord was severed (Rom. 5:12). Consequently, every human being since then has been born with a "flesh" nature that keeps man separated from God. But the Father had a plan to reconcile us to Himself through the shed blood of His Son (Col. 1:20). We must understand that we're sinners who cannot pay the penalty we owe for transgression—and that Jesus' death on the cross pays the debt on our behalf. All who accept Christ's sacrifice will be forgiven of sins and reconciled to God. Having been justified through the Savior's blood—with our debt cancelled and His righteousness counted as our own—we become a new creation in Him.

At salvation, we are accepted into God's family and given the right to call Him our heavenly Father. With this acceptance comes a sense of belonging. We are now part of a worldwide family who are joined together in Christ. On the outside we look different, but on the inside, we are united through the same Spirit (1 Cor. 12:12-14).

Our performance-driven society tells us that acceptance is based on what we do and how much we achieve. But God's message is the opposite: Faith in Christ is the sole reason for our acceptance by Him. The presence of the indwelling Holy Spirit affirms that we will always belong to the Lord.

Supernatural Strength

Micca Monda Campbell

"That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power by His Spirit in the inner man."

Ephesians 3:16 (NAS)

Devotion:

Last fall I began battling severe fatigue. Normal life activities became a real struggle for me. On top of it all, I had a heavy speaking schedule. Knowing I would need an extra measure of strength, grace and inspiration to keep going, I cried out to God for help.

On my way home to Nashville from Houston, God arranged an unexpected encounter with someone He would use to strengthen and inspire me beyond my wildest dreams.

Waiting for my flight at the Houston airport, I saw a recognizable face sitting directly in front of me. Quickly, I pulled out my cell phone and called my husband. "Guess who is sitting across from me at the airport - Beth Moore!"

"No way!" he replied.

"Way!"

"You should say 'hello,'" he encouraged. Heeding his advice, I made my way over to Beth and introduced myself. It was a great opportunity for me to thank her for her faithful service. She was her usual precious and humble self. After our short conversation, I returned to my seat, looking up occasionally to watch others meet and greet her as well.

A few minutes later, it was time board the plane. I got up, gathered my belongings, and headed for the gate. To my surprise, Beth was boarding the same plane. While standing in line together, she invited me to chat. I knew our conversation would be sweet but short because I had seat 1-A on the plane.

Upon entering the aircraft, I discovered yet another surprise. A frail, old man was sitting in my seat. The flight attendant explained that the man needed special attention and politely asked if I would mind exchanging seats with him.

I have to be honest. Even though I am short, I wanted the extra leg room that came with seat 1-A, but Beth was standing right behind me. Therefore, I put on my "spiritual" hat and replied, "Of course, I'll take his seat."

The flight attendant thanked me for switching seats and gave me my new seat assignment. "You'll be in seat 5-C," she directed. In response to my new seat, Beth added, "Why, Micca, that seat is right next to me."

I could hardly believe it. For over two hours, I had the privilege of visiting with Beth Moore. We talked, mostly about big hair and raising kids. Then, somewhere during our conversation, I heard God whisper, How'd I do? You said you needed some inspiration, didn't you?

How'd You do? I responded from my heart. You did more than I deserve—more than I would have ever thought to ask.

Sometimes what seems like a bad deal, like having to give up your seat, is actually God inviting us to experience Him in some way. God answer my prayer for inspiration and strength. Had I not submitted to the situation, I may have missed it.

I never imagined that asking for some extra inspiration and strength would come in such a wonderful package as Beth—but that's our God! He doesn't respond to our times of weakness by telling us to pull ourselves up by the bootstraps. No! He provides real help. God gives us supernatural strength that comes from the Spirit. Moreover, He can deliver it any way He chooses.

Sometimes God works in small quiet ways. Other times His actions are up there with the parting of the Red Sea. Whatever way God decides to work, experiencing Him always fills us with inner peace and strength for our journey.

Dear Lord, You are my strength for today, tomorrow, and for always. Sometimes You work in ways that leave me no room to doubt Your love and provision. Thank You for those sweet moments and help me to remember them when You require me to walk by faith. In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Facing Death Unprepared

Luke 23:32-43

God's grace is revealed in His willingness to welcome anyone at anytime into His kingdom, even at the moment of death. The repentant thief who hung on a cross next to Jesus had absolutely nothing to offer the Lord—no good works, no faithful service. He couldn't even be baptized. In his utterly helpless condition, the only thing he could do was believe. But that was all it took, because faith is the only way to be saved.

Although both thieves began their crucifixion by hurling verbal abuse at Jesus (Matt. 27:44), as the torturous minutes passed, one of them had a change of heart. His railing against the Savior turned to rebuke of the other criminal, and then to defense of Jesus, admission of his own guilt, and a plea for a place in Christ's kingdom (Luke 23:40-42).

What was it that turned this mocker into a believer? Even if he himself had little prior knowledge of Jesus, the crowd's taunts supplied him with the information he needed to be saved. Scornful onlookers accused Jesus of being exactly who He was: the King of Israel, the Savior of others, and the Son of God (Matt. 27:42-43). As the condemned man watched and listened, he turned in faith to the only One who could save Him: the One dying for him.

On the hill that day, one man died in his sin, one Man died for sin, and the other was saved out of his sin. There are only two responses to the inevitability of death. We can either accept or reject Christ's substitutionary payment for our sin. How will you respond?

Fireworks

Van Walton

"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven with a commanding shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet call of God."

1 Thessalonians 4:16a (NLT)

Devotion:

When it comes to fireworks displays I want to sit front and center. I don't want to miss even one "Pop!" or "Boom!" And I want to take in every sparkle and colorful explosion. With my eyes wide open and my heart wildly beating, I exclaim, "Bring it on!"

Not everyone shares my enthusiasm though. I've seen children bury their frightened faces in parents' protective arms, and observed their little hands fly to cover shocked ears.

I feel sorry for those not prepared to enjoy the brilliant show in the sky. I remember my first pyrotechnic display. Yes, the noise shocked me. Yes, the incredible brilliance blinded my eyes. But I had been prepared and forewarned about the sound and light show - I was ready and wanted to watch!

When I scan the crowds at fireworks displays and see the fearful eyes of those caught off-guard, I am reminded of another heavenly display that will cause great fear for those who aren't prepared.

Today's key verse describes the moment Jesus returns to earth. His split-second return bursts forth from the pages of 1 Thessalonians 5 and the book of Revelation with out-of-this-world imagery.

Jesus' return will

· Be loud.

· Be displayed in the sky.

· Involve terrified bystanders.

· Intrigue adoring crowds who are waiting for His return.

Revelation 6:15-16 describes those who are not ready for the heavenly manifestation. They will not bury their faces or cover their ears, but will run to caves and beg rocks to fall on them. Why do they plead to die? Because they are not prepared for the great and glorious return of the Lord.

There are many ways to prepare ourselves for the Lord's second coming. The first and foremost is to believe in Him as Lord of All. Romans 14:10-12 tells us that eventually, "We will all stand before God's judgment seat. It is written: 'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God'" (NIV).

Why not choose this day to call on the name of the Lord and be saved? Jesus promises, "I came that they may have life and have it abundantly" (John 10:10, ESV). That life doesn't end when we die. It carries on into eternity.

I have no idea how or when I will see Jesus face-to-face for the first time. I would be filled with excitement if I knew I'd see Him coming in the clouds. It is likely though that I will see Him the day I die and He ushers me into eternal life. My real concern though is not when I see Jesus, but how.

I want to be ready. I don't want to have an unhealthy fear of God's judgment or any desire to be covered by rocks! I want to be prepared to look into His face without shame.

Are you prepared for that day? If not, what better time for a new start than right now at the beginning of this New Year?

First John 5:12a, 13 promises, "He who has the Son has the life...These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, so that you may know that you have eternal life" (NAS).

God longs for everyone to be in relationship with Him. No one is excluded from the promise of eternal life, but "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved" (Romans 10:13, NIV). He has invited each one of us to follow Him. Won't you accept His invitation and say "yes" to God?

Jesus, I don't know when I will see You face-to-face, but I ask that You prepare me for that day. Forgive me of my sins. Wash me clean. Take away my shame and fear; I don't want to miss one detail of Your beauty. Come, Lord Jesus, come. I pray in Your Name, Amen.

Looking for the Messiah, Part 2

by Max Lucado

Some missed him.

Some miss him still.

We expect God to speak through peace, but sometimes he speaks through pain.
We think God talks through the church, but he also talks through the lost.
We look for the answer among the Protestants, but he's been known to speak through the Catholics.

We listen for him among the Catholics but find him among the Quakers.
We think we hear him in the sunrise, but he is also heard in the darkness.
We listen for him in triumph, but he speaks even more distinctly through tragedy.

We must let God define himself.

When we do, when we let God define himself, a whole new world opens before us. How, you ask? Let me explain with a story.

Once there was a man whose life was one of misery. The days were cloudy, and the nights were long. Henry didn't want to be unhappy, but he was. With the passing of the years, his life had changed. His children were grown. The neighborhood was different. The city seemed harsher.

He was unhappy. He decided to ask his minister what was wrong.

"Am I unhappy for some sin I have committed?"

"Yes," the wise pastor replied. "You have sinned."

"And what might that sin be?"

"Ignorance," came the reply. "The sin of ignorance. One of your neighbors is the Messiah in disguise, and you have not seen him."

The old man left the office stunned. "The Messiah is one of my neighbors?" He began to think who it might be.

Tom the butcher? No, he's too lazy. Mary, my cousin down the street? No, too much pride. Aaron the paperboy? No, too indulgent. The man was confounded. Every person he knew had defects. But one was the Messiah. He began to look for Him.

He began to notice things he hadn't seen. The grocer often carried sacks to the cars of older ladies. Maybe he is the Messiah. The officer at the corner always had a smile for the kids. Could it be? And the young couple who'd moved next door. How kind they are to their cat. Maybe one of them ...

With time he saw things in people he'd never seen. And with time his outlook began to change. The bounce returned to his step. His eyes took on a friendly sparkle. When others spoke he listened. After all, he might be listening to the Messiah. When anyone asked for help, he responded; after all this might be the Messiah needing assistance.

The change of attitude was so significant that someone asked him why he was so happy. "I don't know," he answered. "All I know is that things changed when I started looking for God."

Now, that's curious. The old man saw Jesus because he didn't know what he looked like. The people in Jesus' day missed him because they thought they did.

How are things looking in your neighborhood?

China: Red Star About To Implode?
China's reaction to the global financial crisis was to stimulate domestic demand in an attempt to make up for the sharp contraction in export orders, primarily from the US. The strategy was twofold: a $586 billion stimulus plan and to stimulate private demand by quantitative easing. At a staggering 20 percent of GDP, the stimulus plan boasts a massive infrasture spending program including construction of new railways, environmental protection and investment in new technology. Aggressive quantative easing aimed to boost private borrowing by lowering finance costs and easing credit standards.

The resurgence, with GDP growth reaching 10.7 percent in the fourth quarter (WSJ) appears to vindicate the strategy, but the true cost of the plan lies ahead. Bank loans grew by $1.4 trillion in 2009, or 29 percent percent of GDP. That is madness — and likely to cause a massive speculative bubble in real estate, the stock market, and to some extent commodities. Inflation is also starting to bite, with the consumer price index up by 1.9 percent in the last month.

A sharp cut-back in bank lending, however, will cause a contraction in private demand, sending the manufacturing industry back to where they started — with a large hole in their order books. Welcome to the real world.

Japan: How To Turn A Financial Crisis Into A Total Disaster
Japan is a lot farther down the track than China. In an attempt to avoid the collapse of its banking system after the implosion of an enormous real estate and stock market bubble in the early 1990s, Japan embarked on a similar strategy to the one now pursued by China. Massive infrastructure spending and aggressive quantative easing, with the BOJ maintaining interest rates near zero for most of the last two decades failed to restore the economy to its former growth path. The new government now finds itself painted into a corner, inheriting massive public debt as a result of the failed stimulus program. The IMF expects Japan's gross public debt to reach 218pc of gross domestic product (GDP) this year, 227pc next year, and 246pc by 2014 (Daily Telegraph). With savings rates falling, further stimulus spending is no longer an option and the pigeons of the 1990s will finally come home to roost. Except they now closer resemble pterodactyls.

USA: The Dow Retreats
The Dow retreated by more than 5 percent after the voters of Massachusetts sent a clear message to the White House: either p... or get off the pot. The cosy relationship between Washington and Wall Street is coming to an end as elected leaders scramble to preserve their seats. Expect more legislation to curb the excesses of Wall Street, restricting remuneration and imposing taxes or levies to recover some of the cost of the financial collapse. Treasury has to raise taxes in order to restrict public debt growth and the obvious target is Wall Street.

Financial stocks are worst affected by the retreat, but sectors such as Energy and Materials also display a sharp fall — indicating that a contraction of financial stocks is likely to impact on the broader economy.

Avoiding Japan II
The voter backlash is likely to restrict the Fed's ability to pursue further quantitative easing. Re-election of Ben Bernanke as Fed Chairman is going to be a close-fought affair with even Democrat senators, like Barbara Boxer of California, whose seat is under threat, calling for a new candidate who represents "a clean break from the failed policies of the past". Also, expect increased reluctance from Congress to fund further deficits by increasing public debt — curtailing government spending and increasing pressure to raise taxes.

Foreigners in Malaysia.........

Malaysia attracts foreigners like magnets attracts certain metals.......My great great ancestors came from China, seeking biz ventures with the sultans.........The Indians from India came, to work in rubber plantations...........The Indonesians came, to work in constructions and as house maids..........The Bangladeshis came, to work in factories.....The Burmese/ Nyanmarese came, to work in eateries.........The Africans negroes came, to study and have a good time with our vulnerable local naive girls, lol.......
The world is getting more and more boderless......thanks to the cyber world.
Through human history people move from one country to another. The Bible has very good records on that. Moses led God's beloved people out of Egypt........Joseph and Mary flee Bethlehem to Egypt because King Herod wants baby Jesus killed. When Herod died, father , mother and son, Lord Jesus return to Nazereth in Israel.
..............Dear Lord, thank you for shedding your precious Blood in order that we might live......in Jesus almighty name.. Amen

Vincent Tan curent pet investment... COSWAY....

Read it in the latest issue of the Edge.
God humbles this tycoon time after time.........He sold his Digi and Prudential stake prematurely in order that Times Square culd be completed.
His listed company Berjaya Corp is not favoured by investment funds. He lament that otherwise it will be valued much more.....
So is Bejaya Corp a good buy? Sorry I don't have the experience and expertise to do a FA on it. I will leave that to Dali, ZL, Samgoss, Heng, Horse............
From a TA perspective, its a good buy at RM1 and below......Its facing a very strong resistance at RM1.50.

At a shopping complex......something so sad happened.........

I witnessed the rage of a father towards 2 of his offsprings, a girl, age around 12 and a boy, age around 9. The dad shouted at his 2 children to come out of the bookshop I happened to be in. Very frightened and embarrassed the 2 children went out meekly, seems to know they will get severely punished by their dad.
Sure enough the dad start scolding and slapping the daughter and son in a wild frenzy, witness by scores of shoppers who was momentarily stunned and shocked. Time seems to stand still for a brief moment. Every shoppers within the vicinty stopped what they were doing....It was a very ugly scene, very sad.......
A supposedly happy Sunday outing could end abruptly in this violent manner. Maybe the children disobey the dad's strict instruction not to stray from the parents but, the punishment seems very harsh to me.....
We humans also diobey God when we sin time after time....Our heavenly father punish us gently and lovingly. He turns bad to good. He yearns to touch us with His love. He wants us to experience the peace that defies human understanding.........
............in Jesus most holy name.....Amen

Congrats sam........

sam says, "2 all TA losers out there esp mike loser, my clickbank ac suddenly shot up more than 30% this week ? y arh ? I guess must be contributed by u guys ^_-

Thanks a million ^_^ "

You r most welcome. I also would like to thank you for the increase in visitors to my blog too..........

The enemy will come to kill, steal and destroy........

sam says" But make sure u dont make him get heart attack okay ?"
Without the Lord's protection, I might have suffered a heart attack. But God can do the impossible.........
So currently sam wants me dead? Well my life is in God's hand. He owns it. He will protect it if its in His will.......
I expected the enemy to get more and more aggresive and vicious. If I used my own strength I might have suffer a heart attack in the worst scenario. But why? Just over a few more extra subscribers? The enemy can prosper a person too but in the end he will?....kill, steal and destroy......My millions come and go in this manner......
My first encounter with death was when I had dengue in 2007. I prayed fervently to live.....my prayers were answered......The Bible promises...the prayers of the righteous will be answered.....
Lets see how sam will continue his agenda towards me.........
Let this saga between good and evil unfold........
............in Jesus mighty name.....Amen

How to make your first million.........Easy or not?....

Very very easy, very effortless, very invigorating, exhilarating.......when you depend on God totally. Surrender your life to Him.....
Of course you must do with all your might what God prompts you to execute. God will provide you the "roadmap" to earthly riches and the strength and stamina to reach the goal of a million in your bank account......
This has happened to bro Tiah of TA Securities, bro Koon Swan of the Pan El saga, bro Francis Yeoh of YTL..and many other wealthy Christians.
What if God did not prompts you what to do? Then wait, be still.....He will fulfill the desires of your heart that is good for you. Will a father give stones to his offsprings when they ask for bread?.......
So folks...start seeking God, walk with Him in this life journey as there will be many times you will only see one set of footprints.....When the footprints stop it simply means you have either won the race or you are waiting for the day of Judgement. We are spiritual babies in God's loving eyes. If you turn to Him for anything He will provide..... On your own you will be very vulnerable to the enemy desperate agenda. The enemy's time left to lead people away from God is ticking away fast. He has not much time left, he will be even more evil in the last days......knowing that when he lose this battle wth God, he will be cast to eternal condemnation.........
In my sweet Jesus name of all names.....Amen

Proverbs 15:6...A greedy person tries to get rich quick, but it only leads to poverty.........

"Greed is good" was stressed in a movie about dealings and wheelings in Wall Street....
When one's wealth is acquired without total dependence on God's guidance, then all the wealth in the world that you can get will be all in vain. Its chasing after the wind, laments King Solomon, the richest man on earth .
When you make the first million the next million will gets a little easier and so forth......speaking from my experience.
I have a wealth of an experience because I literally lost all my wealth.....lol.
But what I lost will return in more than one fold, not once but three times at last count. I am currently on my way to acquire another round of earthly wealth ie adding more zeros in my bank account. At last count for this month I have received RM70k cash waiting to start work.....lol
Its my deepest desire to utilise this RM70k for the glory of God.....nothing less..nothing more...
God owns everything....My heavenly Father is awesomely RICH. He is rich in His providence to His beloved believers. He is rich in His Mercy. He is rich in His Comfort to a contrite person. He is Rich to Mankind because He died for our sins.....
In Jesus most wonderful name....Amen

In the Bible, God promise us an abundant life........

Jer 33:9 Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.'

All who are on God's side are winners..............

Some Christians are just making ends meet, surviving, while some talk businesses in the billions. So is the former a loser and the later a winner?
Both are winners. God wants us to win. We are suppose to win the race with God being our Guide. On our own without total dependence on God, is a sure recipe for eventual failure. I made millions with God's providence..........but when I stray away from God, the enemy came to steal and destroy........So is my own dad.....
As Christians we are not just surviving inspite of our economic status and circumstances. We are winners and we are thriving. Imagine the joy, the awe, the ecstasy, the jubilation.......when we see God being in total control both in our life and the universe.........No words can descibe that joy in my heart. Tears of joy will overwhelm us.........

.......be still............and.......know I am GOD..............In Christ most precious name....Amen

The Empowering Emotion of Joy

John 15:9-11

Is your life exciting? Or do you, like so many people, find most days routine and tedious? Have dreams become disappointments? If so, you might feel tempted to give up hope. But God promises fulfillment that can't be found anywhere else.

Joy is a gift from the Lord. It doesn't depend upon circumstances but, rather, is found in Jesus' unchanging character and promises. And that's exactly where to find true strength and power to endure.

Years ago, I found myself being tested on this very point while working on a sermon about joy. A few days earlier, I had baptized a large number of people, and evidently, the repetitive motion had strained my back. There was no pain until midweek, when I tried to lift something heavy. Suddenly, I was dealing with severe backache. Almost immediately, the Lord brought to mind the message I was planning to present a few days later. Even though I complained and desperately wanted to be freed from the pain, I found I could be joyful in the Lord.

Philippians 4:4 tells us always to rejoice in Him. From this command, we know that even in the midst of hardship, we can purposefully choose to live with joy. This choice is possible for believers who are filled with the Holy Spirit and walking obediently (Gal. 5:22-23).

Consider your response to both good and bad times. Does a consistent joy in Christ give you strength? Or do you find emotional relief only in the midst of positive circumstances? Difficulty is inevitable, but God's truth is able to sustain you. Rely on Him for emotional security.

Why BOD? Becoz TA tells us RESISTANCE ahead for the simplest of reasons any stock that had risen consequtively (without break) during a short time frame is subjected to imminent profit taking activities. Hence BUY ON DIP meaning this sucker WILL rebound and create new highs after consolidations.

Stocks sink again on Obama's pushback on banks

Stocks retreat for a 3rd day as investors fret over Obama's financial overhaul plan

NEW YORK (AP) -- The stock market suffered its worst setback in more than 10 months this week as investors decided no matter what the news, it must be bad.

The Dow Jones industrial average slid 216 points, or 2.1 percent, on Friday its fourth big drop in five trading days. Wednesday-Friday, the Dow lost 552 points, or 5.2 percent. All the major indexes fell more than 2 percent Friday.

Investors continued to worry about President Barack Obama's plan to restrict big banks. They decided that good earnings reports weren't good enough. They didn't like mounting opposition to the reappointment of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke. And they were still uneasy that a possible economic slowdown in China might spread.

Stocks have had their worst showing since they began their recovery last March. The market also is seeing the the kind of volatility that dominated the market's long slide -- the Dow has had a triple-digit move five straight days for the first time since December 2008.

The Dow lost 4.1 percent this week, its worst week since it hit a 12-year low in early March. It had reached its highest level since Oct. 1, 2008, only this past Tuesday, closing at 10,725.43. On Friday, it closed at 10,172.98.

John Brady, a senior vice president of global interest rates at MF Global, said concerns surrounding Obama's plan and China's efforts to slow its economy have investors reducing risk.

Obama rattled the market Thursday after asking Congress for limits on how large big banks can be and to end some of the risky trading large financial companies have used in recent quarters to boost their profits. It's not clear what will come of the proposed changes but investors are selling anyway.

"It appears to be a move to put some shackles on risk-takers," Mitch Schlesinger, managing partner at FBB Capital Partners in Bethesda, Md., said of the new proposals.

The problem with earnings reports is that they're not meeting investors' high expectations. Tech stocks were among the big losers Friday after Google Inc.'s fourth-quarter revenue didn't meet forecasts, and after a Citigroup analyst lowered his rating on the stocks of seven chip makers.

The market is particularly sensitive to tech companies, since they are seen as indicators that the economy is returning to health -- or possibly backsliding. But any part of any company's earnings report has the potential to upset the market.

"We expect (earnings) to be better," said Brett D'Arcy, chief investment officer at CBIZ Wealth Management Group in San Diego. "People are being more particular."

In some respects, stocks' big plunge isn't a surprise. Many analysts have been predicting a correction, which technically is a drop of 10 percent from a recent market high, since before the start of the year. They have warned that investors were expecting too much from companies this early in an economic recovery. They warned that there was no way that the market could sustain the rally that lifted the Standard & Poor's 500 index 65 percent from its March 9 lows.

The Dow fell 216.90, or 2.1 percent, to 10,172.98. The Dow's three-day loss was its worst since March.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 24.72, or 2.2 percent, to 1,091.76. The index is down 5.1 percent in three days, its worst drop since March 2009.

Friday's drops were the worst for the Dow and the S&P 500 index since Oct. 30.

The Nasdaq composite index fell 60.41, or 2.7 percent, to 2,205.29, reflecting a pullback in technology stocks in response to Google's earnings, and also an analysts' downgrade of chip makers.

For the week, the Dow lost 4.1 percent, the S&P 500 index slid 3.9 percent, and the Nasdaq lost 3.6 percent.

There is more uncertainty for the markets next week, and not just because more earnings reports will arrive. The Fed holds its first meeting on interest rates of 2010. No one expects the central bank to boost rates but investors will be looking for the Fed's take on the economy.

Bernanke, whose term ends Jan. 31, is still waiting for the Senate to confirm his reappointment to another term. But a growing number of senators are blaming the Fed chairman for the nation's economic problems.

There are signs the big moves in the market will continue. The Chicago Board Options Exchange's Volatility Index jumped 52.5 percent for the week. An increase in the VIX, which is known as the market's fear gauge, is a sign that investors predict more gyrations in stocks. The VIX closed Friday at 27.31, above its historical average of 18-20 but well below the 89.5 it peaked at in October 28, during some of the worst selling of the financial crisis.

Tech stocks suffered in particular Friday. Google dropped $32.97, or 5.7 percent, to $550.01, while chip maker Advanced Micro Devices Inc. fell $1.11, or 12.4 percent, to $7.88.

The mood in the market was dark enough that upbeat earnings Friday from General Electric Co. and McDonald's Corp. weren't enough to sway investors

GE reported a better-than-expected profit and said orders and backlogs for its products and services are increasing. Its shares rose 9 cents to $16.11. McDonald's earnings showed that it was holding up better than its competitors as consumers cut back their spending. The stock rose 19 cents to $63.39.

Five stocks fell for every one that rose on the New York Stock Exchange. Consolidated volume came to 6.3 billion shares compared with 6.95 billion Thursday.

Bond prices were mixed. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note, which moves opposite its price, was flat at 3.59 percent from late Thursday.

The dollar was mixed against other major currencies, while gold fell.

Crude oil fell $1.54 to settle at $74.54 per barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The Russell 2000 index of smaller companies fell 11.24, or 1.8 percent, to 617.12.

Overseas, Britain's FTSE 100 fell 0.6 percent, Germany's DAX index lost 0.9 percent, and France's CAC-40 dropped 1.1 percent. Japan's Nikkei stock average fell 2.6 percent.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed the week down 436.67, or 4.1 percent, at 10,172.98. The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 44.27, or 3.9 percent, to 1,091.76. The Nasdaq composite index fell 82.70, or 3.6 percent, to 2,205.29.

The Russell 2000 index, which tracks the performance of small company stocks, fell 20.84, or 3.3 percent, for the week to 617.12.

The Dow Jones U.S. Total Stock Market Index -- which measures nearly all U.S.-based companies -- ended at 11,182.41, down 422.41, or 3.6 percent.
